Phrag Mountain Fawn
Howdy, I just got into Orchids and while attending a potting class I was given a Phrag. Mountain Fawn. While I'm new to Orchids I did run a commercial greenhouse growing Points, Mums and a variety of potted house plants in soilless mix for the retail trade in S. Texas.
I now have a small (10 X 12) greenhouse on my rear deck under a Live Oak tree here in Central Texas and have 5 Catt., 12 Phals., 2 Den. 2 Phrags. and a couple of yet to be identified plants. While Central Texas is hot and dry I'm hopeful the nearby lake will help with high humidity. Does anyone know anything about this Phrag.? I would like to know it's culture and what type of flower it might produce. Thanks |
Are you sure that's the name?
that's the name on the tag.
I've heard of Phrag. Mountain Maid, but not Mountain Fawn. I don't see anything registered as that name. Does the tag say anything else, by chance?
nothing, I guess growing it out will tell. I understand they need lots of water.
For most phrags, yes! They grow near rivers and streams and are considered by some to be "the only orchid you can't over-water".
If it's anything like Mountain Maid, then this is for sure the case. What else would you like to know? Come back and post a picture when it blooms please! |
If I can bloom it I will. Thank you very much for your time and interest.
Sure! Give it lots of light... but no direct sun. Take care!
Yes this one isn't registered. If that is the name on the tag maybe someone has given the name they intend to register.
I have had this happen once before with an Odontoglossum and I rang the nursery to find out what the parents were. They were intending to give a particular plant a name but just hadn't registered it yet. I am not saying this is the case but it's possible. |
If your phrag is young, it could take some time to bloom. I have one that I got as a seedling and it is finally going to bloom after 8 years! It took off after I put it in s/h in lava rock. It really loves it. Mine loves morning sun.
