Softcane Dendrobium - possibly anosmum?

Hi folks.

It's nearly mid-spring here in Australia. I have this softcane from my grandmother's collection that's just opened - photos are of two separate plants taken this morning. It flowers on leafless canes, is sending new canes at the moment and smells like raspberries. Based on these pics and the images, I'm guessing D. anosmum.

Any ideas? Or did I get it right?

And on another note should I try and cross it with a D. aphyllum I also have out at the moment?

Cheers,
Aus.

From a quick check of RHS, D. aphyllum x D. anosmum is D. adastra (registered 1892).

I can't find a D. anosmum x D. aphyllum.

Cheers,
Aus.

Looks like D. anosmum to me. I'd say it needs some water though and I would not recommend cutting off the old canes. More old canes mean more energy for flowers next year which will result in a better blooming.

Hi folks.

Thanks folks. Nice to put a label on four or five plants.

I don't cut off old canes, they store energy. Also am planning to switch mediums, I'm moving out of straight charcoal to a perlite/cocopeat mix (very light on the peat). They have done pretty well in the charcoal - they've been in it for over 5 years - but the ones I've switched are loving the perlite/peat mix I use.

These always look thirsty though, even when fully hydrated. It's the papery substance on the old canes that gives this impression.

Cheers,
Aus.
