What is it?

My friend has this plant and doesn't know what it is. I was thinking a bamboo of some sort but I have no idea. Anyone else?

Dracaena?

It's lucky bamboo, which actually isn't a bamboo at all. It's a lily. It looks like it's been abused. They don't live that long as house plants, the longest lived one I've heard of is about five years. If this plant is older than that, it's time to pitch it and go spend 10$ for a new one at the grocery store.

She's had it for over 21 years ha. It has a bunch of leaf buds coming out of the top. It was neglected for a while but since its been somewhat taken care of its turning green again. Is there ways to go about reviving it? It has a lot of sentimental value to her

She just confirmed that it looks like a dracaena when it was grown out

As long as it isn't overwatered or left in the cold, it should make a full recovery. I have a marginata which is one of the easiest to grow. Some of them, however, like extra humidity (think orchid), good light (east or west window), temps above 55'F.
I know how she feels. I have had mine at least twenty years, too. Even though I don't give it much attention, it always makes the cut of plants I keep. Good luck and just be patient. :) |
Alright thank you. How often and when should you water?

I have one that doesn't mind being forgotten for a few months but I would advise letting it dry completely, then watering. They say only two things can kill a drac...cold and overwatering. :)

My first thought was dracaena as well.
I have a big one taller than me, I was told to mostly water the leaves not the soil/roots. If you water into the center of where the leaves meet then the water holds in the crooks of all the leaves. I was told that was a better way to water than at the base. I only water the base enough to stop the soil going so dry it contracts and the plant get's wobbly. I've had mine 10 years now it started off half my height. I sometimes forget it for months at a time and if I forget it long enough it starts loosing some leaves, but I just occasionally pour water down from the top of the 5 growth points and it somehow keeps going despite my neglect. |
