Monotropa uniflora (Indian pipe)

This is not an orchid. It is, however a flowering plant with no chlorophyll - a saprophyte. Like orchids, there is a dependent relationship on certain fungi.
It is somewhat rare, and when I have seem them, they are always in the deep woods. But not this colony - it is growing in my neighbor's lawn!! This is one of the largest colonies I have ever seen (larger than just the clusters you see here). Hope you enjoy the photos! |
this is really cool

Oh wow! How cool is that?
|
Really cool!

Thanks for sharing! That is really interesting and the plant is so fitting for this time of year because its other names are the corpse or ghost plant.

I would not call them rare, but I have never seen them on a lawn. Nice find too!!!
