Old Hybrid Paph
This is a photo of one of my first orchids, a very old hybrid that came originally from the estate of W. Averell Harriman, an important political figure during the Truman administration. I received it in the 1980's from a friend, now deceased, who was caretaker for time on the Harriman estate. The hybrid was registered in 1902 and to my knowledge has not been remade since. The plant must be over 100 years old therefore and is a hybrid of Paphiopedilum Godseffianum and Paphiopedilum druryi.

Wow!
Thanks for sharing this! |
It is a gorgeous flower. It is a valuable heirloom. These are the flowers that becomes priceless because of its history.

Thanks, both of you for commenting. I agree, Bud, that though the flower is nothing so great, the fact it's so old makes it valuable.

I go hiking in Harriman State Park in NY State, which is the old Harriman estate. Small world.

That's great to know. We used to hike there occasionally, too, when we lived in New Jersey.
