Dend. christyanum
Here's Dend. christyanum, one of the nigrohirsute Dendrobiums. I grow it mounted and cool.

Thanks for looking and commenting, Tommy and CTB.

Lovely!

Thanks, Sonya. It's one of my favorite Dendrobiums (after the Oxyglossums).

It's one of my favorites, too. I've only had mine for a couple of months, and haven't mastered the culture. It hasn't looked thrilled with the care I've given it. It's hard for me to grow anything that likes cool temps, though that hasn't stopped me from trying yet.
Mine came to me from FL, where it was thriving so I may have a shot yet. If you have tips to share, your experience is welcome! |
I grow mine mounted, Beth, though I've also grown this species in a pot. About the only things I can advise about culture are (1) not too wet, especially when it's not actively growing, (2) coarse mix if in a pot with a good amount of charcoal and perlite or something that doesn't break down and stay wet, and (3) not a lot of fertilizer.

I was planning on keeping it outside so I'm glad to hear that you grow yours cool. Whats the lowest that it gets at night in the winter in your area? I would say about 42F here, is that okay? & How often do you water? The seller could provide no care information :/ |
Hi Brian,
Mine is not outdoors and the temp gets down to about 55 in the winter. Not sure about 42. I water mine every day, but it is mounted and without any additional padding except a very thin layer of live moss, so it doesn't stay wet very long. |
