Systemic pesticide?
 

Can anyone please tell me if the "Bayer Advanced 3-n-1 Insect, Disease, & Mite Control" (that says "Up to 30 Days Protection" on the bottle) is a systemic? (for sure?. It doesn't use the word 'systemic' [or similar] at all anywhere on the bottle) What about the Bayer Advanced Rose & Flower Insect Killer, is it systemic? I have had the hardest time finding the actual 3-n-1 that everyone recommends... I couldn't find it at Lowes (even asked, to no avail).. Finally found it at ACE Hardware! Yay!! :biggrin: (now, I have many "back-up's", they're similar, but not "it", versions, lol).

As some might have noticed, I am having a slight problem with (hard) Scale :(( (as is SJF) I thought I'd gotten rid of them w/ soap & a good scrape, & a repot... Nope... Found some on a couple somewhat-recent 'present' (bday present) orchids (& no, the presents didn't come that way - [they're from a very reputable nursery]... but the bag babies, did! :evil:)

Oh, and just for future reference, is the Rose & Flower one the one that is safe to use on buds/flowers? I feel like I read that on a thread recently... :hmm

I don't think its systemic as its not advertised so. I have it too.
I subsequently got Houseplant Insect Control - granules - which is advertised as a systemic. Its a Bonide product and says that it lasts for 2 months. Its good for mealybugs, I know this because I had a houseplant that was infested. After 1 sprinkle and a watering, all gone.
For scale (and others ) I am going to try Dr Bonners Peppermint Soap - its apparently fantastic.....and organic and I am going to use it as a preventive.

That product contains three chemicals, Imidacloprid, Tau-fluvalinate, and Tebuconazole

Imidacloprid (systemic insecticide; same chemical used for flea control on dogs, if you use products like Advantage)

The Tau-fluvalinate is a non-systemic mite control

The tebuconazole is a fungicide

I use a Bayer Dual-Action Rose & Flower spray that has the imidacloprid (systemic) and beta cyfluthrin (a non-systemic synthetic pyrethroid). It has worked very well for me in controlling mealies. I am using it now on some plants with scale that are in isolation for the next few weeks - so far, so good.

(Edit) - sorry, I posted w/o seeing post by Orchidsarefun. I meant the "Bayer Advanced 3-n-1 Insect, Disease, & Mite Control" has the 3 chemicals listed at the top. AFAIK the peppermint soap contains no such pesticides.

I wasn't sure if imacloprid is in-and-of itself systemic, or if it needed something else to make it systemic, if that makes sense? So, thank you! That answered my question. ;) Probably should've phrased my questions better...

Have you used the Bonide product on orchids? I have heard that it won't work well with orchids, b/c it is designed to be used for houseplants, ie soil...

I remember reading a post by Jeff Tucker who uses the Bayer Advanced Rose & Flower Insect Killer and he did not have any problems with flower buds or keikis being affected by the chemicals....

yes, I have used the granules on bark as well as sphagnum. The granules "stay put" and don't wash away/dissolve that quickly, as you would expect. I haven't noticed dead insects - they are probably all in the pot/s - dead. I know it got rid of the tunnel spiders that were inhabiting a couple of the pots and ants that were all over my catasetums.

Next up is Dr Bonners. There is a lot on the web about it, and its perfect for regular and preventive spraying. I have zerotol for everything else. I think I am all set !

2nd the bayer 3 in 1 works wonders use it on my crepe myrtles, and all other plants it works wonders. I trimmed up my largest crepe myrtle to make it easier to mow/water/ keep fire ants at bay and I had dead grass hoppers falling all over me. Just FYI it only lasts about 3 weeks for me and only if we do not have a heavy rain. When this storms begins to pass and everything dries up I will have to re spray.

I have actually been able to keep my Mary Jane Magnolia alive this year because of the Bayer the grasshoppers killed my original one and one of my rose of sharron and a rose bush last year when I was using all organic materials.....

Orchidsarefun, thanks! I may have to try that stuff... I have to say, I don't mind the little spiders that were inhabiting my phal flowers all summer... ;) They seem to be gone at this point tho. They actually seemed to eat other (bad) insects, along with the help of lizards, and frogs... & I really haven't had a pest problem this year (as well as every year in the past 5-6 years - no pest problems, however, last year was the exception), right now, the scale is isolated, but I definitely wanna do them in! .... I also would like to do a general "de-bugging" before bringing them inside for the winter. Thanks y'all!

I use the"Bayer Advanced 3-n-1 Insect, Disease, & Mite Control" as a spray on the leaves and then water the bark lightly with the same solution until there is runoff. I have to treat every 7- 10 days for 3 applications. It works great.
Lowe's carries this more frequently than Home Depot. But Lowe's runs out quickly. Not sure what town you live in NC. The Lowe's in Chapel Hill is where I get mine.
I've read recently that Safari kills soft and hard scales. Very expensive...I'd have to have a few of my
friends agree to a group purchase.

I m OK with most critters, especially spiders.
Fortunately its the end of the season and they will all die off anyway. And its time for de-insectifying as the pots are all coming inside soon.
Here's a photo of the "tunnel". It was a brown spider, quite big - about the size of a quarter.
