Vanda root break
 

Hi everyone,

I just started growing orchids, got some oncidiums, 2 phals, 2 vandas and 1 ascocenda.

I have not encountered any problem with any of my plants. Except just a few moments earlier, one of my vandas fell down, and part of some roots broke off.

Please advise me of what to expect from my plant, will it survive? There is a spike on it, but the flowers have not yet opened.

Don't worry - it takes much more damage than a few broken roots to kill a Vanda, the same thing is true for most orchids. I expect that spike will continue developing and bloom for you.

you have high humidity in your grow zone....your Vanda will survive outdoors..... as long as you don't keep on changing positions your spike will grow and open into large flowers soon....I read about a couple of members here who cut the roots of Vandas when they grow too long and dense.....but I don't like to cut Vanda roots I like them very long and thick....I have a 4 meter long roots Vanda that is 11 years old.

I agree that a couple of broken roots should not be a problem on a healthy plant. Just keep caring for it as normal.

Just wanted to share a pic of it.

OHHHH its a Vanda with spots....
you must open a separate thread under Vandas and post pictures when it fully opens. This is newly opening so it is not flat and big=wait until all flowers have fully opened and take pictures.
give us also a description of how you are growing this, temperature and humidity, the source of light and your watering/fertilizer regimen.

I am growing my Vandas indoor, by an open window which lets plenty of light in (not direct sunlight though, i'm kinda apprehensive the leaves will get burnt).
I would say humidity is high enough where I live.
Watering - previously, every morning i would just let water run over the plants till they were soaked completely. But since a few weeks, i am soaking only the roots, and spraying the leaves, every morning.
Fertiliser - I don't know the names, but the guy I bought my plants from sold me two, he asked me to mix both in water and spray. He calls them A & B. one is blacky in colour, don't know what it is though. I use these 2 times a week.

Has the flower fully opened yet? It looks like it will be really pretty.... But you left us with a big tease! :evil:
