growing Angraecum distichum "Mt. Cuba"
 

I have an Agraecum distichum "Mt.Cuba" growing in spagham moss in a suet holder. It isn't doing very well. I was told to keep it constantly wet & in dappled light. I know it doesn't like to be repotted but do you think I should do so anyway. It has been in this container for about 3 years. It did bloom sparsely this spring. Thank you, Lee

I am growing the distichum and don't have a clue about why your plant doesn't look healthy but I can tell you how I grow mine.

I mounted mine on a small cork mount and covered the roots with sphag. I grow it in my Phal area in a dark spot, temps never below 60 and it is watered daily, winter and summer in a g/h.

If it were mine I would definitely remount it onto something more than the suet feeder. The distichum grows by multiplying off the current growths so is very hard to keep the roots moist in a pot. It is also a very slow grower/multiplier.

I hope you can resusitate your plant because will be gorgeous when it blooms.

I do have a question about using sphagnum on mounts. Do you need to change the moss after a time?
I currently have the angraecum in fine bark, doing quite well (except for the bit of sunburn when I forgot to take it in after the rain). I plan to mount this when it needs repotted. Mine is so small, I hope one of my kids catch on to the orchids

My plant is also mounted in cork.
I refresh the moss above the roots to replace the decayed ones.
I have to water it every other day in the summer warm months while it is outdoors....in winter I water it once a week while it is indoors.
It never gets temps below 50F.
And it survives the New York heatwave out in the fire escape.

Thank you, Bud! I have only grown bare-root on mounts so I did wonder about it.

Leaf I never change the sphag on any mount. I've never had an issue with it causing any problems because I've never had it decay. I do use very good sphag.

Remember the distichum is a real shade lover but still needs the moisture.


Bud I'm surprised you can put plants on the fire escape? I thought that was illegal.

LeeB if you click on the picture you will see where previous blooms are on the foliage. You will only get more blooms as it grows longer plus get new growths from the leaves. It multiplies from the base and off the longer foliage. Mine puts out one big bloom cycle but I will also get a couple of other bloomings but not as many flowers.
