More Fuukiran: Survivors of the Frost
 

As some of you may know, I lost a good number of neos last Fall when my plants were in the greenhouse. It was 80 something degrees in the afternoon and dipped down to 20's overnight. All the Sedireas were toast and the root systems of all my Cym goeringii turned to mush. Now I check the weather app on my phone 5 times a day.

Thankfully, the majority of my fuukiran plants lived to tell. My bunch is just starting to bloom now that we have consistently warm weather. Ryokouhu and Shachikouryu are first in line...

I've had Ryokouhu for several years and this is a first bloom for the plant. Hopefully, next season will give me more than one spike.

Shachikouryu is not for everyone. Only those who appreciate the bizarre and ugly. However, it's very unique in that each time it blooms, the flowers look different. Over the years, I've gotten all kinds of weird "flowers".

I remember the Great Fuukiran Disaster of '12 and was greatly saddened. It's wonderful so many survived and that these look so great. Shachikouryu sounds like a cool plant to have.

Your Ryokouho looks great. Especially that one plant in bloom. It looks really "tall" compared to my Ryokouho. Great growing!!

Adrienne, I still remember that you want a Setsuzan (Snow Mountain), right? My plant did have some damage but it still produced several spikes this season and new growths from each of the damaged fans. If those new growths do well this Summer, I can probably have a division for you next season, if you still want one.

Thanks, Jeremiah. I've had this plant for a few years and it's almost indestructable. Tolerates high light, high temps, low humidity and now...freezing temps. It also, rarely loses a bottom leaf. That's probably why it's gotten pretty tall.

If you're fairly new to fuukiran, many bean leaf varieties probably look the same. When you get used to seeing lots and lots of them and increase the size of your collection, it is much easier to identify the subtle differences between different varieties. Maru Tamakongo supposedly has rounder leaf tips than a regular Tamakongo. Hence the name "maru".

Nice to see your plants growing and blooming well again ! Your plants are becoming quite impressive clumps!
Did your Cymbi survive the loss of root system (with energy stored into bulbs) or not?

No, I lost all my Asian Cyms too. Strangely, the Dend moniliforme quickly grew more canes and lots of new roots from the new canes. I hot less blooms on the Dends this season but at least they pulled through ok.

On a side note, have you tried to upload any videos on flickr lately? Do they not allow videos now? I could not do it on the app..
