A Crappy Day with orchids
My dark purple phalaenopsis hybrid were completely rotten.
I bought it about a week ago and its green leaves began to yellow one by one ever since it came to a new home. Then the flowers began to drop one by one. The pot was very light as I did not water the plant. It looked really bad today. I gave a gentle pull on one of the yellowing leaves, and it came right off. Then there was this familiar smell. I pulled other leaves also and all of them came off and revealed the rotten center. It was apparently well in the way of crown rot before my purchase. Unfortunately, the store only has 24 hour return policy. Oh, well... My art shade dendrobium hybrid developed three mystery rings after not showing any rings for a couple of months. tossed it today along with the phal. It was a replacement plant I threw away last year for the same reason. It's a shame because the flowers are really nice and unique. oh, well... :( One more disaster of the day, my TJ bought Wildcat had one of the older pbs rot. I wasn't sure if it was just old or rotting. so I cut open the browning part. yep, there was the smell. I twisted off that whole pb and threw it away. Hopefully the rest of the plant will be fine. On a happier note, I have some flowers that opened up just recently, and some new purchases. Photos will follow soon. |
So sorry to hear about all the recent bad things... I have a very soft spot for the dark purple Phals!
Well, let's hope that a new day would bring some new surprises. To paraphrase - another day, another orchid! WO |
So sorry about your plants. Let's hope it's one of those 'comes in threes' things and there will be no more :(
|
That's sad...but perhaps the upside is that now you have room for three more plants? Just so you know you're not alone....I'm dealing with two gorgeous long spikes full of buds on a noid intergeneric that are yellowing out. Sigh. I really wanted to see those flowers.

So sorry NY

Nothing dies within 24 hours you know. oh, well... |
:( dang ...
Some places do have plant guarantees ... but I'm guessing where you got that Phal doesn't? :( |
All the stores in the flower district seem to have the same return policy. All sales final or within 24 hours.
I've only returned one paph. It was bought in bud. When it opened three days later, the flower was terribly deformed. I went back to the store and explained my reason. They told me nothing was wrong with the plant, and they were not blind. lol I argued and finally got a replacement, a dendrobium of the same price. Another time, I bought two green complex paphs. a different store in the same area. I went back in two days. They told me something in my apartment was to blame and blah blah and they were very rude. I yelled at them and left the store. never been back to that store since. so now I either do not buy paphs in bud or buy thinking I either waste my money or hit a jackpot. lol Yeah, the stores in that district is all about selling a lot and no customer service. once out of the store, it is out for good. lol |
Sorry to hear about your bad luck. I went through 'the black plague' (as I call it) with my cattleyas a couple of autumns ago and lost a bunch of seedlings. I know the feeling. Hope things are off to a better start!

Now I just noticed that my dendrobium Genting Fragrance is developing that dreaded mystery ring on one of the leaves of the new cane.
Oh, my.... Usually once you see that first ring, whatever you do, it keeps coming back until the plant is, basically useless. So frustrating!!!! |
