C. Intermedia "alba Hoyt" (I think I spelled this right). It grew at a weird angle and I didn't want to try and correct it. It's just coming out of a severe bought of virus/fungus/bacterial something or other. Been sick for a few years.

What a majestic flower!

How did you treat the virus/fungus/bacteria?
Physan20?

Sick for a few years - hats off for your patience!

shushu45 06-21-2013 10:58 PM

Very beautiful. Congratulations.

Gorgeous! Keep saving it! That's worth it! What have you done to correct the sickness? Apparently, whatever it was....it's still happy enough to bloom!

At first I used some Physan 20 but it didn't look like it was helping. I repotted it in lava rock and didn't water it much. I cut off every part that started turning black (black rot) and put cinnamon on the edge of the cut. The leaves are still somewhat mottled with green areas and greenish yellow areas. So far (two weeks) the flower is still unblemished. When a new shoot would come up and had deformity or black spot I cut it off and put on cinnamon. All I was after were the new buds. That is all I wanted. That is where the future of your orchid is and is the most important part of growing an orchid. I also watered it with some rose fungicide. I would mix it up in a small bucket and dip the whole thing in it and let it soak. Slowly the new growth showed less and less problem. So hopefully it has come out of it's doldrums. Not sure what worked. But I just kept it dry with no water on the foliage or pbulbs (shrugs shoulders). It was just a rescue. One other thing to share. Orchids want to bloom. I have had cats and laelias that bloomed as the orchid died. It's like a last gasp sometimes. I have some severly infected (guignardia) catts that are pushing out flower sheaths right now. Whether they finish or not is the question.

Nice job on the recovery. I'm not much of a catt person but this flower is quite the beauty

One strange thing I noticed is that it used to have more of that C. Intermedia lip and this flower doesn't. Not sure why. Ray? Tucker? Steve?

Really lovely, nice recovery job!
