Cattleya tenebrosa var. vinicolor 'Rain Forest'

An eBay purchase from two years ago. Flowers every year for me. An intermediate to warm grower. I have heard they can grow cool too, but I grow it rather warm. Min nights 60s.

Very nice! I have a var. aurea with two sheaths at the moment. I grow mine with slightly cool winters of nights 55F min. and days 65F.

I was wondering how cool it can take. Some posts say that nothing colder than 55F 13C. Our winter nights can get as low as 48F or 8c, I really don't have room to grow this inside so I want to try growing it outside with my other cattleyas.

Mine seems quite happy and will bloom for the 2nd year for me. I grow it in moss in a clay pot. That's contrary to how I grow all my other Cattleyas (in medium bark). But when I bought it from Francisco Miranda of Miranda Orchids, he said his Laelias like moss with a bit of lava rock in a clay pot. So I tried it and it seems happy.

I think the trick is in the Clay Pots. They breath and won't keep moss too wet. I have grown many ailing plants that way specially oncidium and phalaenopsis

I had one before I sold it last year and it bloomed reliably every year. I love the color combo. Very easy to grow too. Flex, it grew very well down here and it gets into the low 30's nights with 50's-60's days. I just keep it dry when it gets cold. Didn't hurt it any.

Thanks James. If you can do it in San Diego I can do it in Hollywood :)

I love tenebrosas. They are not choosy.
