Den. Antelope type hybrid
I picked this plant up inform our local Trader Joe's back in spring of 2011! It has been my problem child since. I had to give it high light level but also warm nights. Not an easy job for my area. It sulked for two years, putting out growth but no flower. Wanting to provide it with the best light possible, I burnt it last fall, which is usually our hottest months.
I resorted to put it in a mini greenhouse with a small radiator last winter. I guess it liked that and gave me some blooms this season. A common orchid, but boy is it finicky!! http://i1260.photobucket.com/albums/...psdb7415b6.jpg http://i1260.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4fd4c1c0.jpg http://i1260.photobucket.com/albums/...ps43083cd8.jpg Andrew |
Wow..worth the wait..beautiful flower..I hate those problem children too!
|
you must be doing right by it to give you such lovely flowers....
|
Lovely!
the things we do for our 'chids,eh? |
It looks just like my dendrobium 'Warawan'
I also see it offered at TJ in Chelsea, although flower counts are always so low on the ones I have seen. maybe it is a similar but different hybrid. Mine makes quite a few and it is now almost non-stop bloomer. It flowered in early fall and stay in bloom until spring. longest lasting orchid I have. Now, while growing two new shoots, it is also flowering again. When this bloom is done, there will be yet another spray of flowers from the newly matured canes. Gotta love my den. 'Warawan' |
Good for you NY :) Tolumnia and Tropical dens seem to be your specialties! A bit envious!

@nyorchid
It does look like warawan. I am going to tag it as such! Thanks for the tip |
I think it is the same plant as well. They just look so much alike.
By the way, I just found a website (a Florida based vendor) where they carry some beautiful antelope dendrobium hybrids. hmmmm I will have to make some space. lol At least yours is blooming now. They should last for a long time. Mine began opening flowers. Only if they had fragrance. They do but very faint. can't be perfect I guess. |
I don't detect any fragrance, but I had a phal type den before that was very fragrant.
I can't buy anymore antelope type dens: they are so difficult under my conditions. Essentially I had to duplicate Florida year round, not so easy for LA. I also saw the pics from your other post, your den plant so gorgeous |
Too bad we don't have Trader Joe's here- that is nice.
NYOrchidman, which is the vendor if you don't mind me asking? There is a webpage for a vendor with antelopes near me, but when I tried contacting them, the phone number is disconnected and the emails bounce. |
