P. Corning's Violet x Yungho Gelb Canary

This is a first bloom seedling, that I got from Peter Lin, it had two spikes when it arrived a few weeks ago (maybe a month ago... but I can't remember off the top of my head!), but I broke the tip off one of the spikes, :(( so now, I only have one active spike, with one flower  it's been open for a week, wanted to see if it was gonna develop more fragrance. I do like it, but I can't help but think that if it were not as 'faded', it would be sooo cool! (it must be the micholitzii in it's background that makes the color faded, as far as I can tell, that's what that species does sometimes... please correct me if I'm wrong?) The form is great, its a little cupped, but I don't really consider that a bad thing in this case... Oh, and it smells like roses, but its very faint.
A question, for u hybridizers out there (I'm curious, b/c I have a few seedlings that will be first bloom's, and a couple flasklings now too... so I like to try to imagine what everything is gonna look like, haha) how much do/can flowers change btwn first blooms, & second & third blooms (size, color, smell...etc.) if at all? :dunno: There are some pics that I took w/o the flash, they are more accurate to what it looks like in real life; and there are ones I took with flash, that appear really brightly colored... it seemed to just bring out the natural coloring, but not as faded looking as it is in real life, its kinda funny what the flash did to it! (the colors are still accurate, just brighter than they r able to be in natural light... could it be brighter if given more light next time? :hmm) Thanks for looking! :waving EDIT: Sorry for the long post! :blushing: (I'm a curious person lol) ... Also not sure what happened with the one sideways pic, wasn't like that 'till I attached it! :dunno: |
Very nice!

could it be brighter if given more light next time? /QUOTE] To your 1st question, Alot depends on the growing conditions. As the plant matures and increases in size so should the amount of flowers (up to a point). Most novelties only have a few blooms at a time but that can increase if your plant retains old spikes and reblooms from both the old and new. Size should improve as well. As to being brighter, Color and form should improve as well but you may always have a degree of cupping with some breeding lines. You should get better color if the plant is grown with brighter light and cooler temps as the buds are developing. As far as fragrance, generally with more heat, humidity and light, the stronger the smell. Once the flower opens it generally takes a few days to develope but some are fragrant from the get go. Seeing as your plant was a recent import don't be too disappointed with it. Remember this has gone from optimum conditions to being shipped in a dark box to Peter and then shipped to you, alot of stress which can and will affect your plant and blooms. Overall your bloom has good form so I'm confidant that after it gets adjusted to your growing conditions and reblooms you'll be much happier. Now if only my plant would get with the program I'd be much happier too! 2 stalled spikes, so I'm giving it more light to try and coax them into activity! We'll see! Judi |
Thanks WhiteRabbit!
Thanks Judi! That's what I was thinking, but after seeing this bloom, (which I really do like, the cupping too, actually ~like javanica) I thought it had the potential to be even better... If that makes sense? Lol and, as for stalled spikes? Geez... I have a few of those too! |
