Lowes selling "exotic" orchids

I was surprised to notice at Lowes this weekend that there was an assortment of new orchid plants in addition to their standard Phals that they always sell.

Cattleyas, no flowers or spikes mind you, just the roots and leaves, for $8, in tiny little cubes (ice cube size), and wrapped in mesh.

Then there were other "exotic" ones, unfortunately I can't accurately remember all the genera, but NOT phals. These were $15, in maybe 3" pots. Again, just the leaves, roots (in sphag) wrapped in mesh.

I didn't pull the trigger and buy anything because I simply couldn't see any roots through the mesh, and even the larger ones in clear containers didn't show a single root. Otherwise they seemed healthy.

Has anyone seen this before, and/or tried these? It would make it one of the only brick & mortar places in my area I know to go find some of these plants...

Thanks!

Better Gro bag orchids. I have posted about them and so have others. You can search the threads. If you catch them when they first arrive at the store you can find some nice ones

Treasures found at Lowe's on this same forum topic has some too :)

Lowes selling "exoctoc

I recently bought a Cat. type at Lowes (don't have the name here). It was supposed to be yellow. I didn't realize that it was in spike when I bought it and was pleasantly surprised. Well, in a couple of weeks when it bloomed I found out it wasn't really as advertised (IMHO). But, it is doing OK and has another sheath. I usually have good success with the "baggy babies" from Lowes if I select carefully.
I am fortunate enough to have a really good seller nearby (Clown Alley in Pasadena) so I am not restricted, thank heaven, to Lowes. I also have good success with mail order sellers.

Lowes on occasion gets some very nice not often seen around town type orchids. The orchids are from Sun Bulb company which is Better Gro on the shelf in the stores. If you get them before they get beat up in the store from people digging thru em and the watering people murdering them you can find some nice ones. Quite often this time of year you can find them even blooming in the bag or with spikes getting started. My latest Lowes finds were as follows

Epicattleya 'Mae Bly'
Brassavola 'Yellow Bird'
Brassavola 'Mas mejor
encyclia ramonense
Vanda Perry Hollingsworth Bow'
vanda manuvadee
all 12.98 and these 3;...
Brassavola 'Yellow Bird'
Brassavola 'Mas mejor
encyclia ramonense are all spiking now a few months out of the bags :)

just look for rot in the bags and throw them back. dont want to take rot home ya know.its okey of it rots when it gets there but dont take it home ;)

you can also save the receipt and you get a full year replacement on the orchids .try anyone else give you a year to kill an orchid and get your money back...:goodluck:

Really? A whole year long guarantee on orchids? Is it for all or just the bagged one?

RJSquirrel 06-05-2013 05:11 AM

Its for any of the plants they sell not just orchids. Home Depot is usually 90 days and no guarantee on seasonal plants like poinsettias etc. HD has some nice oncidiums and beallara's on occasion but they dont sell bag babies as far as I know. I havent ever seen any at HD anyway. I dont usually see orchids with names on them at HD either other than 'Orchid'.

Nothing wrong with some nice orchids no matter where you find them :waving
