Spike, Keiki or Root?
5 Attachment(s)
Hi,
I noticed some new growths on my orchids and was hoping someone could help identify if it is a flower spike, keiki or root? CYMBIDIUM INSIGNE: I think the pointy growth is a flower spike. It showed up in March / April and it's only gotten 1/4" bigger. I believe the green nub is a root. DENDROBIUM LAWESII VAR BICOLOR: At first I thought it was a keiki but now that a 2nd one showed up just below it this week, I'm guessing they will be flowers? Thanks for the help! Susan |
The first 2 looks like new pbulbs starting which is terrific news! The last one could be a keiki or a bloom depending on the type of orchid - my first guess is it is a keikei as the cane looks a little worse for wear and keiki's are often a response to this situation.

I don't know what the usual bloom season is for these, you might check IOSPE for that info ...
The Cym looks like a propagated back bulb ...? New growth is much smaller than the old pbulb. Propagated back bulbs take a few years before becoming bloom sized. |
