Masdevallia Bob Hoffman 'Highland Tangerine'
5 Attachment(s)
This is a division of one of the Masdies I got in March of last year - my first venture into Masdies. The plant was easily big enough to divide, so I did - to try different potting media and windowsills to see which did best for me. Plant was not in bloom when I got it. First blooms on both divisions were awful! The second time around, blooms were somewhat better, but were "special" - had some extra parts on them :p
Finally! Got a reasonable looking bloom! Could probably be a bit better, but it's a big improvement! I was afraid the plant was going to be a dud ... Growing in chc, clay pot, north facing window (the other division is potted the same, but in a shaded east facing window - that also has a fairly decent bloom, but past it's prime now). I'm hoping one, or both, of these will kick into gear soon, and give me more than one bloom every few months - especially the bigger division ... Photos are poor - hard to capture the colors; my for reals camera has died, not that it's a very good camera - I actually frequently get better photos with my phone, but depends on the light; the bloom isn't in the ideal position for photographing ... The last two photos are the previous "special" blooms from November ... can see the colors better at least Thanks for looking :) |
Great colour on these. I can see how the last photos are of "special" blooms. One too many sepals, lol. Just makes things interesting. Still symetrical though, kinda of. How is it doing now?

Beautiful and those last photos are interesting.

Thanks Tindo, Ron :)
The larger division had some nice buds coming along early summer, but they blasted after several days of extremely hot weather - this hybrid is supposed to be warmth tolerant, but it was just too dang hot for too many days, I think :p So, still have longer to wait to see if these will bloom regularly bloom normally or not. |
:rofl::rofl: I guess you are in the "different" stage of orchid growing already:-) I am happy and excited for every single spike/bud/bloom I ever get:-) I do love this Masdie, one of my favorite especially for the color combo, it is like the sun on fire, just amazing!

Nice!
Cheers. Jim |
You might try moving out of chc into either sphagnum moss or a fine bark & perlite blend; chc is great for its water retentive properties, but it quickly accumulates mineral salts (and starts out with quite a few to begin with...) which can be hell on masdevallia roots.

Love the color. The form is finally getting to be right altho the last pic seemed like a mutant flower growing an extra petal. Maybe next blooming cycle you get a vivid tangerine instead of coral....and bigger flowers true to its form.

Thanks all!
