Den. Maiden Charlotte, what in the world is on her leaves???
 

Hi,
I received this plant last week. I just noticed that some of the leaves have turned yellow, brown and have raised green spots. What in the world is this? I have tried searching online to find it with no luck.

Please help.

I don't grow that dendrobium but on "hard cane" dendrobium hybrids, I've seen something similar. They show up as eithre black or green raised circular spots. very strange and there are a few threads on them under the title "mistery rings".

I don't think there were any clear answers as to what those rings are.

I had one dendrobium that developed those same rings.
Well, I tossed it. lol

Thank you for answering. The vendor said Dend. do that frequently when they are shipped. I am just worried.

That kind of explanation is just BS or if not intentionally lying, just ignorant excuse.

I have bought so many dendrobiums, all of which were shipped to NYC from somewhere. Hawaii, Florida, India, Thailand to name a few.

Well, do you know how many I have seen with leaves like that?

not just out of what I bought but everything I've seen at stores I've ever visited and trust me I've seen hundreds!

It has nothing to do with shipping.

It has to be at least some kind of physiological disorder, if not disease of some sort.

The one I tossed out was Den. Sonia.
It already looked bad but I got it anyways. I know, what was I thinking?
Well, the flowers lasted forever but most of the leaves (almost all) developed this unpleasant black or green raised rings and turned yellow and dropped one by one.
By the time the bloom was done, I threw the whole thing away. I soaked the decorative pot it had been in bleach solution. I hope whatever was causing the rings all died out in the bleach. lol

I would request a refund ASAP. NYC is correct, shipping has nothing to do with that.

The vendor said that I could ship it back for a refund. Back it goes. It scares me a bit since I posted pictures of Catts. I got from them at the same time. There were yellow leaves and some markings. I hope that was just ugly, normal age spots.

I started walking around examing all of my plants. I have a Phal. Bast. in spike with weird rings on one of the base leaves and a Phal. Mem. Audrey Mend. with the newest flower showing what may be color break. None of those have been re-potted, clipped or near each other...ugh. Three different vendors too. I will post pics of the other two.

The first two pictures are of Phal. Memoria Audrey Men. Does it look like color break is displayed in the new bloom?

The rest are Phal Bastianii. That looks like it could possible be chlorotic spot virus. Why can't all the orchids be virus free?!

It is best to start with clean healthy looking plants. Even these are sometimes already in trouble, so why start with ones with suspicious markings and suffer headache? :)

Regarding the red phal flowers, it is normal to show those red portion showing up as fine spots against bright background. Mine does that when flowered during the heat of summer. Winter blooms open all clean dark magenta.
What concerns me about it is the flower form of the smaller flower. Do you see how it is malformed?
It could be genetic stability issue or virus.

The other pictures of leaves, I do not want to see something like that on my plants. ;)


I wish all the orchds were virus free. oh, well...
Plant viruses (or should I say orchid viruses specifically) easily spread thanks to improper and careless handling done on our part, humans.

I have to say that if I was the grower and I pulled plants that looked like this I would be embarrassed to send them. You can bet if you get more than one that has issues in the same shipment then whatever else you got from them will as well and it just has not manifested itself. The fact that it didn't have many leaves to begin with would have made me :scratchhead: . Latouria Dens are nice bushy plants with lots of leaves. The fact that many of the pbulbs have no leaves tells me this plant has been doing this for a while.

Frankly I'd send the whole lot back and ask for a full refund.
