sunnyblue greetings from finland...
after nursing a dendrobium nobile through winter and now just waiting for it to show some signs of life (http://www.orchidboard.com/community...um-nobile.html), i recently found myself in a flower shop with another dendrobium on my hands! my guess: dendrobium bigibbum hybrid, evergreen. the tallest pseudobulb is about 7 inches tall. |
Dendrobium hybrid in the section Phalaenanthe. That's all I know. Without a label, it's not possible to nail it down to grex and cultivar names.

Lovely!

I can see the bigibbum form of the spike, flower, leaves and the plant bulbs; but the color is quite different even compared to other variations. It must have another parent cross to produce that monochromatic tones.

thanks, everyone. that this plant belongs to the section phalaenanthe should be enough to help me properly care for it. quite a departure from the growing pattern of the dendrobium nobile. this is apparently a warm-growing evergreen variety so i will not be making room for this in the cold cellar come autumn! =)
oh and by the way, if this rings a bell for anyone, the leaf edges are maroon as well as the leaf spine underneath. or is that common? i haven't the faintest. |
Looks like one of those hybrids that was phalaenanthe X spatulata or latourea then back-crossed to phalaenanthe for several generations.
