Laelia purpurata

This is a purpurata that I purchased as a large seedling a while back. It finally bloomed and after a few technical difficulties (it opened the buds while still partially inside the sheath so I had to cut it away and one flower is upside down! :blushing: ) it seems to be an interesting flower. It is a cross between a carnea 'hihimanu' x carnea 'H&R', but seems to be a bit darker and has a light pink blush on the petals, although Im not sure if the blush shows up in the pics. Anyway, I really like it! Its always nice when you are rewarded with a flower you really like! Thanks for looking.

It still looks good and is worth the surgery you put it through. Very nice!

It is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!! one of my favorites, though I have never tried growing it! (I haven't a clue as to why I haven't yet!)

Delicate and lovely!

Isurus, by the picture it is possible to say that it is not the variety carnea. The presence of pink blush on the petals is another thing to reinforce this. On the other hand, it shows good petals and is a keeper for sure!!

It looks great!! You did fine with it.
Any fragrance? My purps have an anise like scent.

And Elliot they're fairly easy to grow you should try one; very rewarding.

Beautiful!

Thanks for the kind words from everyone!! It still has 3 or 4 new growths coming in so Im hoping for a great show this spring! Now that the awkward first bloom is out of the way, hopefully Ill be able to see exactly what this little guy can do!

I think you may be right about it not being a 'carnea.' Maybe I can name a new variety!

I have had a handful of purpurata seedlings for a while now, and they're slow to recover from the transport from original grower to me (it wasn't even through mail, it was a 30 minute car ride!). Are they resentful of repotting or extreme environment changes? They seem to be slow growers for me at 9 months after purchase.
