Cycnoches barthiorum
 

Here is a pic of my barthiorum. It seems to be the last of my cycnoches to bloom, but it is always worth it it:biggrin: :banana:

For a while, I thought I was going to lose it but it seems to have turned the corner for the better! ;dance:

Great! Actually i just Bought A Cyc. barthiorum today! Does it have a frarance?

Also a question regarding all Catasetinae. In the resting period should you lower light levels also?

As I recall, it does have a pleasant but mild scent. Most books and people recommend giving their Catasetinae higher light levels in winter because in their natural habitat there is less water and clouds, so everything pretty much goes to sleep, including the trees they are mounted on. Ive done experiments of my own, however, and higher light levels are not required for growing success. In fact, I drop all of mine in a very dark corner of the porch all winter and everything is fine. This makes sense because the plants are, after all, asleep! They dont need high light levels because they are not utilizing sunlight so it makes sense that they do fine in winter under bright or dark conditions. When in active growth, however, these guys really do best in high Cattleya light leves.

Very nice, Steve. Your plant's display is quite impressive. I'm about near the end of my patience with my cycnoches. All of them (I have four Cycnoches warscewicziis) bloom every fall, but during the summer they're nothing but spider mite magnets. Do you do anything in particular to keep mights away--or do you have a "trick" for dealing with them if you find them on the leaves? I like the wildlife that explores the porch where the cycnoches spend the summer (well, with the exception of the mites!), so I'm very reluctant to use pesticide. Congratulations on your flowers. They're fantastic.

Thanks for the compliment Steve! Though I have to admit this post is from a few years back and due to some misguided experiments of mine, this plant is still recovering and should be back to its old glory in a few years. :blushing: As for the mites, I don't ever see them, not even one which means I don't know how to deal with them. There is nothing that I have encountered, however, that does not respond well to being sprayed with rubbing alcohol. Have you tried this?
