Bulbo. NoID S/H
2 Attachment(s)
I got this bulbo about two months ago It was in a bark mix, And had root rot and scale pretty bad. I soaked it to get rid of most of the scale then put it into S/H.
So I noticed that the pseudobulbs looked like they were shrivelling. I think this was because the pot I was using was to tall? and that most of the moisture was evaporating before it got to the new roots? Today I soaked them for about an hour then repotted them with a pot I made out of a cranberry juice bottle with a deeper reservoir. It's been a month since I've seen any signs of scale, After I soaked them I trimmed off the roots that had died(From switching to S/H??) and were rotting, causing mold. You can definitely seen some new root growth in the pic's though!! Let me know if I'm doing anything wrong thanks!!! |
You have to be patient...
I have all my orchids in S/H. If the pot that you are using is taller than usual, you can drill the holes higher than 2 inch. Stop unpotting and repotting, you don't want to disturb the new roots. Usually, you should wait for new growth to appear before you make the switch to S/H, (that's what the experts like Ray advise). But if you had no choice and couldn't afford to wait when you made the switch, you can't do anything else, just be patient. |
Ok thanks!
So Just let the old roots just rot away? |
I agree it's best to leave it be and not keep unpotting it. The roots will just rot away and that's fine. I had one a couple of years back I tried unpotting to remove the dead roots and that just killed off the new roots it had grown and I still had a mass of dead roots in the pot (and had been set back as a result of loosing two lots of roots). Since then I've just let it be and the dead roots in the pot don't seem to hurt it at all, the new ones are doing just fine.
Make sure you flush well occasionally, that will help the old roots flush away as they disintegrate. |
Awsome, Thanks!!

One more thing...
Don't leave the pseudobulbs buried in the potting media, they can rot. |
Good to know!

Yep, I had a scale problem also with my Phals. A good 24hr bath got rid of them. Nothing but water. No medium at all. Then repot it.

For the soak I did 2oz of brown listerine to a gallon of water with a Tsp of castile soap and a Tsp of neem oil for two hours. Some of the critters tried to escape the water by moving to the tops of the leaves that were sticking out, these I took out with alcohol and a Q tip.
Hope the little bastards enjoy Davey Jones locker... Any that survived got another alcohol spay down the following week and so on. |
