Cymbidium dayanum

A fairly small Cym with small (but fabulous!) blooms; cold to warm growing, likes a lot of sun! I have read that these may be fragrant, but I haven't detected any fragrance from mine.

After four long years of waiting ...
- Some of you may remember I had posted a few months ago when I was so excited to have found spikes on this plant. There were two spikes - the first opened 2 of the five buds, the other three blasted :( But now the second spike is blooming :) The spike is near the center of the pot, so blooms don't display well, but I still love them!

I grow this outdoors year-round. It takes lows down to just below freezing for short periods on occasion, sheltered from frost or freeze, and now winter rain - the rain only because I hadn't been able to get this to bloom, and I was just trying to do something different. Winter is our rainy season, so my intent was to grow it slightly drier - never had any rot or root issues from it being in extremely wet weather. I don't know if it was the slightly drier winter that did the trick - it spiked in the fall following it's first drier winter - or if it was something else ... :dunno: It takes highs of upper 90s - slightly over 100 for short periods on occasion, but shaded during the hottest part of the day. A couple of years ago, it even took a heavy dumping of small hail.

The second to last photo is my seemingly ginormous thumb for size perspective.

The last photo is the dayanum next to a standard Cym

Thanks for looking :)

I honestly don't know. IOSPE says "needs even year round conditions." - but I don't know if there's a preference for cool or warm... Andy's says "Warm,Intermediate to Cool;45°F min. to 98°F max.(tolerant of extremes, favoring warm)", but they also say 'low light', which I don't think is correct (mine takes a lot of sun) ... :dunno: I have read a lot of contradictory growing info for this one :p Someone reporting what he was told by a Florida Cym grower, that he thought it wasn't hot enough there for them !?

I did find this thread where member Cym Ladye suggested this species as a possibility for growing indoors http://www.orchidboard.com/community...y-indoors.html

and found this: " Here in Key West, Florida I have had success with Cymbidium aloifolium,
Cym dayanum and Cym finlaysonianum ." [OGD] warmth tolerant pendulous cymbidiums

and Warm loving cymbidiums
which includes dayanum as fairly warmth tolerant ...

So, seems like it may be do-able for you ;)
