Need help to ID my orchid
1 Attachment(s)
Hi! I'm new to the orchid world, and very new to this site. I'd love to have some help IDing my orchid. I purchased it last summer, and have since repotted it and it has lots of new growth. Up untill recently I was just calling it an Oncidium, since that's all the tag said. Now that I've learned more about orchids I'd like to have a more complete ID. From what I've found online I think that it is a Colmanara Wildcat 'Leopard', but that it just my best guess as a newbie. Can anyone either confirm that guess, or does anyone know what it really is? Thanks!

You have a hybrid (Colmanara), which is a blend of Miltonia, Odontoglossum, and Oncidium orchids. I have two similar hybrids, and as far as I can tell they are treated the same as other oncidiums.

Nice blooms. Love the colors and the textures. Yes most likely colmanara. From there it may be difficult to pin down exactly what it is but if you like the name you found I'm good with it. I always struggle with names because I get so many noids and rescues. But I've come to the point where I really don't care. They are all so beautiful and as long as they grow I'm a happy camper. I like the name you picked. Suits the flowers well. Welcome to OB.

Most Oncidium alliance intergeneric hybrids do well with moderately bright light, intermediate temps, and lightly moist potting media. |
It sure looks like a "Wildcat" variety - but as said before - if you don't buy it identified, it is very hard to pinpoint the exact name - there are so many hybrids that never really get named, they just get bred and placed on the market. Unless you are going to breed or sell the plant, the ID is somewhat moot. If you are just collecting and want a name to call it - I think you found a good one!
It does look just like a Colmanara "Wildcat" variety that a local grower has - not sure if it is "Leopard", but that sure would fit! Grow it like an Oncidium - Whiterabbit gave a good description of the basic care! Best of luck - Steve |
Oncostele Wildcat, Steve is right, 'Leopard' is not far off.

Correct me if I am wrong, but as I understand it, Oncostele is the RHS name - Colmnara is the Sanders name - this is soooo confusing to soooo many! It was so much easier when they just called all of this group Oncidiums - I know that technically they are not, but to those of us who aren't using OrchidWiz or something comparable, this name game is just confusion-on-a-stick! Thanks for the input! Steve |
