Will these orchids be okay?
4 Attachment(s)
I ordered two orchids, a mini phal and a vanilla vine orchid, off the internet. They arrived today and they look terrible. I'm assuming they look like this because of the cold, but I'm not sure of their condition before shipment. The leaves are mushy and wrinkled. I have contacted the seller and they have refunded me, but can these be saved? I'm very disappointed...

Definitely looks like frost damage not sure if those can be saved. Did you have heat packs supplied with the plants during shipment? :(
|
There was a heat pack, but it was cold when I opened the box :(
|
well the phal looks like it still has nice roots so I think it may make it. I dont know any thing about vanilla.
|
I would keep them under watch to make sure rot does not set in as cold damage can easily cause fungal rot. Glad the vendor reimbursed you for them always nice when they make it right.

If the stem or part of the stem of the vanilla is still solid then it may be saved even if it initially loses the leaves. If the base of the stem is mushy cut it above the mushy area and replant it with a node in the pot, put a little humidity bell over the pot and just keep it moist but not wet.

So long as you got your money refunded, I would give these plants a little time, water, and light and see what happens.
My husband, early on in our marriage, pointed out that I am quick to give up on things. He convinced me of the value of the "wait and see" approach. I have three or four trees that I gave up for lost that still grace our yard, several orchids and other houseplants, and even a fish (that we found outside the tank) that are testaments to the validity of his philosophy. So...yes those orchids don't look so good! Others with more experience will chime in with solid suggestions of what to do. I am hoping you will be pleasantly surprised. |
I think I will take the wait and see route, I really have nothing to lose at this point. I checked them this morning and both have firmed up just a bit.
