Would like to know what this flower is

I saw this flower on my visit to France in August of 2011. I thought it was an orchid but honestly I'm not sure. I was in the southern region of France if that helps. Just curious as to what it might be.

It's not an orchid. Those are sweet peas

Ah ok. Thank you.

Yes, a sweet pea! I can see how you thought it was an orchid, it's very Phal or Den like in appearance. There are quite a few native terrestrial orchids in France, and the south has a few nice ones, if you know where to look!

Yeah, sweet pea, but I can see the orchid likeness as well.

My Mum used to always grow these on trellis in the garden every year. The fragrance was always wonderful :)

We used to have a lot in the garden too, but now that I've moved out my mom doesn't bother too much with sowing annuals. We had planted perrenial sweet pea once, but it was a big disappointment, those don't smell at all!
