Newbie with first Phalaenopsis no roots
 

Hello all well im brand new to orchids and my first one has root rot with pretty much no roots left.
Im doing the bag method.
-so I have it in a container above moist moss (not touching) with a bag over..
Any suggestion??!

Sorry for such a sad start for you with the orchids. If it makes you feel any better, many of us including myself started that way as well! :rofl:

I would invert the bag and leave a small opening on top to prevent crown rot.
Also, if you have Physon 20 it would be good to soak the stump from time to time to prevent bacteria rot.

I sometimes mist the underside of the leaves and soak the stump for 20 min or so in seaweed or K-L-N solution... but only when I'm not feeling too lazy. :D

Good luck with your project and perhaps while you're patiently working on it (expect up to 2-3 months before you can see some signs of life), you might want to buy another orchid? :D

Without roots to take in moisture, this will die even with the bag method. Recently there was a suggestion here about using tupperware instead. Place the phal inside the tupperware with spagnum moss layed around the inside of the TW and keep the moss moist. Sounded good. The most important thing you can do for this phal is to spray the undersides of the leaves with a sprayer as often as you can. A couple times a day if possible and I would use distilled water so that there are no accumulated salts built up. The undersides of the leaves are where the stoma are and this is the respiratory system of the plant. A medium light level also will help. Warm like room temps are good also. But above all else don't get discouraged. We've all been through this. And orchids like company;-)

When I started I had three of these. I tried the spag and bag method and lost two of them. So, I took the third and put in a small pot with med. bark. I put it in an east window and cared for it just like the others. I did spray the leaves a couple of times a day. Lo and behold it put out some new roots. that was two years ago and today it is in spike. Don't know if it will work for you, or if I just got lucky with that one.
I am more careful now and check roots before I buy. But, we all start somewhere and learn as we go.
