NYBG orchid show
Does anyone know when they announce what the theme will be? I wasn't overly interested in last years theme and have been waiting very impatiently to see what they'll do this winter/spring! I've never been to the gardens before and am very excited to go! The train goes right by there from up here but doesn't stop there! It's so upsetting, you have to transfer to another train or two to get there. I didn't want to drive but I guess we'll have to. Does anyone also know about the parking? We'd get there early, but does the lot fill up real quickly? I have a handicap tag and would need to be close but those spaces always seem to fill very fast. Also, sorry for so many questions, do they have a good selection of orchids for sale during the show? If I can't make it the first few days does all the good stuff sell out?

I'm a member of the NYBG. parking can be a problem for handicapped, I suspect. We always park in the auxiliary garage that is across the street, but there is parking close, just outside the gate. I'd give them a call and find out what the options are and how much it costs. If you are a member, parking is generally free.
I haven't gotten any info on the orchid show yet. We'll probably go to the members' preview, which is usually a little less crowded. I don't recall a great orchid sale, just in the garden shop. Maybe I missed it. |
I never realized there was a theme. The orchid show itself while nice is not really a show. The orchids are interspaced in with all the other glasshouse plants. At the end of the trail there is usually a showstopper arrangement that is very nice. The gift shop has a selection of orchids for sale, nothing great but a decent selection.
If you go during the week and get there by 10.30 or 11 you can usually get a spot in the front by the main entrance. The park itself is well worth the trip, I usually go 2 or 3 times a year. Bill |
Bill in Mar/Apr they have a special orchid show every year. They do a theme (last year was vertical the year before was, I think, chocolate)
I'm not sure sure how the sale is though. They said they will have some basic to unusual orchids for sale. I have a feeling the orchid show will be very crowded which really tires me out due to my health. I wish I could become a member and get in early, but we just can't afford that. Of course getting there and parking plus two tickets are almost half the membership cost, but we may not go more then once next year. I'd love to be a member and go a few times a year, but we're a little too far for that. If we lived closer to the city then I would do it in a heartbeat! |
