Epi. porpax hybrids?

Hey everyone,
I have a quick Q for y'all. I can't seem to find much information regarding small statured Epi hybrids. Does anyone know of breeding efforts are being done with Epi's like porpax/pepperonia, schlecteriana, conopseum or other little guys in this genus? I see Woodstream has Epi. Panama Ruby (which looks really cool!), but not much else. I'm curious because I am slowly assembling a breeding collection of plants and am focusing on minis and I'm curious as to why this group has been overlooked. Getting pictures of their hybrids will give me a frame of reference as to what various hybrid progeny would look like when they bloom.

For example, Cattleya alaorii seems to be fairly recessive with its color scheme when crossed with something else. Its progeny are essentially the same colors as the non alaorii parent, but the alaorii shape and size remain, thus giving relatively easily anticipated offspring with regards to flower size, shape and color. I'm wondering is the small Epi's are similar in this respect, but can't confirm/deny this thesis due to lack of evidence!! lol

Anyway, if someone knowns of hybrid names that would help me immensely! Then I could try and look them up and see if this avenue is worth exploring.

At least 44 first generation hybrids of Epi. conopseum/magnoliae and 5 second generation hybrids. Hardly an overlooked species.

Wow! I was not expecting conopseum to be the leader of this group. I figured it would be porpax. Thanks for the all the info!!

PaphMadMan 12-18-2012 08:25 PM

Since Epi. conopseum is native in several US states it may have benefited from a lot of 'what the hell, why not' crosses being made.

isurus79 12-18-2012 08:33 PM

Definitely. It seems like there were several waves of this type of thing over the years!

Ooooo, I have some Epi. porpax, and although I would like to stick with breeding just Phals, this little Catt alliance species has caught my eye.

I had a bunch of the hybrids that were done in the 80's with conopseum, many of which were not registered. Many of them were like different colored conopseums, with thin curled segments and were not as nice IMO as conopseum itself. Still have pictures of some of them of them somewhere. I've not seen any of the porpax hybrids. Enc. tampensis produced much more attractive hybrids like Green Charmer.

I'd love to see the pics if its not too much trouble. It does seem, however, that conopseum and the porpax group will not work that well for line breeding. The few pics I've seen of the hybrids are not promising.
