Encyclia tampensis dying- no roots
I recently brought home what I though was a healthy Encyclia tampensis in a 2" pot (I will post pictures in a couple hours when I get home) After a couple weeks, I noticed some of the smaller pbulbs shriveling and when I checked out where the roots are supposed to be, there was some thin rotten threads. When I clipped off the dead, there was nothing left. I dusted with RootOne and put it the rootless mess onto some moist sphagnum. It is continuing to deteriorate. Any ideas? Im thinking about cutting the two remaining mature, round pbulbs off and putting them each in their own pot 1" mesh pot with Hydroton and try to bring them back semi-hydroponically. Again, I apologize for the delay but pictures will be up in a couple hours.

Encyclias like to be either mounted or potted in a very quick drying media. I recommend mounting it on cork or tree fern. Just keep the humidity up and water when bone dry. If there are viable pseudobulbs it will put out new roots. Encyclias are tough plants, they just like to dry between waterings. Good luck!

By the way this is one of my favorite species. :)

Well I didnt have any bark or tree fern so I just used a piece of a broken clay pot. Im putting a bag over the whole thing for humidity so I put an inch of water in the bottom of the pot. Its obviously a terrible mounting attempt (my first) but the plant was on its way out and I had to try something. Ill let it get completely dry for a full day and then submerge the roots for a few minutes when it needs to be watered. It was dusted with root hormone then sat on moist sphag for a few days so maybe that will trigger some root growth.

This is an extremely hardy species. Yours should perk back up and start growing roots during the warmer months. In a year, you shouldn't have to worry about this problem anymore. I think this plant is very salvageable, just keep it humid.
