Saving a "rescue" Paph
Greetings group - I got what I would call a "rescue" paph from a friend, and as they say, nothing is really free! The poor thing had three fans, but two are gone and nubs remain, the third, and only, fan has leaves missing for a good two or three inches, then two leaves on each side and a new one starting in the middle - so has the appearance of a long stem (almost looks like a Den!). I will be repotting it and am not sure if I should leave that long stem above the media or bury it to see if it will push some roots. I have pretty good luck with paphs, but have not come across this kind of damage before. Any advice is appreciated. Oh, it's a Magic Leopard x Fairrieanum so I'd like to save it! thx

Sounds pretty bad. It's difficult to say if the plant's worth saving or not without a photo, but in my experience, what you've described does not sound very promising.
If other people have differing opinions, then idk. |
Thanks - yea, I figure the odds aren't good. I did notice that along the stem where the bottom several sets of leaves were gone that it started to try and push out root, and also a few nubs where it tried to push out roots right at the base of where the leaves that are left meet the stem. I buried everything up to the leaves, we'll see if it continues to try and push roots and if any take. Just crossing fingers - it's very sad to see ....

If that's the case, then yeah, I think you did the right thing, so cross your fingers and hope that it makes it.
Good luck. :) |
