Why are there so many PURPLE orchids?

I know this is a dink, beginner question but. ..

Why are there so many purple orchids?

And also, on a minor dink note: What are those flowers by our names? I am guessing that it relates to the number of posts but if so, what is the relationship. . .posts to orchids?

Or do the orchid silhouettes represent the number of orchids you've done in?

(Evil laughter)

Gwen, Don't have a clue about why so many orchids are purple... possibly to do with it being attractive to insects/pollinators??

The flowers under your name definitely are related to number of posts (I don't think there would be enough space if it was for every orchid killed off!) and I think it goes soemthing like:

Purple one for donors.
1 flower - 100 posts
2 flowers - 500 posts
3 flowers - 1,000 posts

I don't know what it is beyond that... but maybe another flower for each additional 1,000 posts?

Gwen,

There is no relationship between the orchids you've killed and those symbols.

However, it is a well-established fact that one is not an "orchid expert" until you've killed your weight in plants. I find it interesting that ever since hitting 50, I find room for more 'expertise" every year!
