Red leaves on rescued (epi?)
 

Probably half of my collection, at least, are rescue jobs. Abused, neglected, or otherwise mistreated plants from well-meaning yet ignorant lovers of pretty flowers without the time or desire to maintain the life form responsible for those blooms.

I think this one is an epidendrum, probably Reed stem. From the culture sheets I've been looking at, I believe I may have encountered one of the very few possible problems with these otherwise extremely hardy plants. The reddish, somewhat wrinkly leaves were indicated as a possible root infection, and I'd really like a second (third and fourth, too, please) opinion on this.

Compared to the pics of other epis I've seen, this one doesn't look very healthy. Of course, I'm not even sure what it is to say that with any certainty.

When it came into my possession, there were several keikis which I clipped and potted in sphagnum. They seem greener and smoother. I sprayed the mother thoroughly with bug soap and have been keeping it in good sunlight. It's potted in medium-coarse bark.

That looks like normal coloration from light. I would say, as long as there are not spots on the leaves that are dying, it is a good thing, not a bad one.

I second this opinion. We grow these out doors year round sometimes under full sun/ their leaves are redish brown.

I'll third that. Mine are outside year round and the ones in a shadier location are all green but those getting some more sun have a reddish tint. They still all bloom.

When my orchids gets too much sun, the leaves turn reddish, but they are still ok.
