Dendrobium antenatum
I ordered a Dendrobium antenatum (and a phal liodoro, bellina and violacea) from a german vendor (Schwerter Orchideenzucht). I guess I'll get them on wednesday. Before getting them, could you give me some advice on the culture needs of the antenatum? Does it need a winter rest, and if so, when is the moment to start with it?

They do not require a rest but are however warm growing so should not be left exposed to temperatures below 15 degrees Celcius. You can get away with slightly cooler during winter if you reduce watering and only water on the warmer days allowing the excess to evaporate. They will not tolerate frost. I have some seedlings which I deflasked in autumn and had to bring them inside over winter. As long as they have bright light and a little bit of moisture they seem happy. They have new shoots coming now so I assume they are happy :)

Thank you for the info.

The orchids I ordered from Schwerter arrived today in very good shape. The packing was excellent and at first sight I got some strong and healthy plants. I hope they will thrive under my cares.
Attachment 73600Attachment 73601Attachment 73602Attachment 73603 Phalaenopsis Liodora. It says 'in bloom', but I realy prefer it this way, in bud. Attachment 73604 Phalaenopsis bellina 'Chin Yeo' Attachment 73605 Phalaenopsis violacea var. sumatra (what does var. stand for?) Attachment 73606 Dendrobium antenatum (is this plant blooming size as it was supposed to be?) That's it. I got myself 15 new plants this last week so for now I must calm down a bit. I don't have any more space (at least, that's what I keep telling myself, but I know it isn' true. There's always space for another one, or two, or...) |
wow they are so healthy!!!
that den. antenatum is not blooming size yet by the looks of it. but then again thats just my opinion. |
It could bloom at that size but considering the canes on a mature plant are 2 foot long or more... I think you'll be waiting a year at least.

Your Den antenatum is blooming size. However, in Spain, now through winter is not its blooming season. Given the proper warm & bright light conditions, it should bloom sometime, or maybe more than once, next spring through summer.

I'll keep it as warm and light as possible during winter and hope for many flowers in spring/summer.
