Anyone have phal dends in s/h?
 

I am considering purchasing some phal dends and antelope type dends and was wondering if anyone has successfully grown these in s/h? Pictures would be nice so I can see the results if anyone has done this.

Also, (hope I don't sound dumb here) but you do wait for the new roots on the dends as well before transferring right? Like spring time? I don't want to kill my new purchases before we're friendly.

Any help or advice is most welcome. Thank you in advance.

:hello Yes, don't transfer into S/H until new roots start, older roots will just rot. The dens should be fine, but the roots need to be kept warm. Alot of evaporation takes place in S/H, and evaporation is a cooling process. When the roots get cold it shocks the plant, roots stop functioning properly and rot. I suggest a heat mat, or clear container so sun can shine through.

I have had two Dendrobium phalaenopsis hybrids in S/H for 3 years. They have done very well. They bloom several times a year.
They are in bright indirect light. Outdoors in summer, warm temps, indoors in winter.

Don't change to S/H until new roots are starting to grow and be sure and anchor the plant firmly in the LECA. They are topheavy and can lift out easily. I have found that the roots don't establish as well when they are always shifting around.

I bought a phal den on ebay in the spring, which arrived bare root. Having found the watering a little tricky with these in the past, I decided to put in in s/h in lava rock. It has a beautiful new, strong growth. It's nice to not have to worry about getting the watering right. I also am having great success with reed stemmed epi. I have one that bloomed for more than a year and a half with this method.

Not a Dend, but all my Phals are in s/h. (in plastic coffee drink cups)
I first punch holes all around the rim with a small hole paper punch and the obligatory two holes near bottom (with the business end of an unloaded hot glue gun). Then pot in hydroton and run long twist ties across the top to anchor them.

I found a package of 8" green ties for a couple bucks at the garden center of the supermaket. They also sold a spool of it to cut your own lengths.

I'm so happy to know phal dends will grow in s/h. I can't wait for mine to arrive.
