orchids and our lighting at home
 

I'm not sure if this question was brought up before but I saw a documentary and there was a deciduous tree with no leaves except one branch. That branch happens to be under a street light and the leaves are still very green. I suddenly had a though on how this affect the orchids at home and our lighting do those lights affect their growth and flowering patterns also?

I don't know too much about this, but I think there are some orchids that won't bloom if they receive too many hours of artificial light during times of year when days are short. Rather like Christmas cactus that are triggered to bloom by decreasing daylight in fall. Even regular indoor lighting can prevent blooming.

I guess you are talking about photoperiodism. In temperate zone, some plants uses day length (or actually night length is more correct) too influence physiology including flowering. But I guess that night length isn't so useful near the equator.
