When a Metal Halide bulb fails
7 Attachment(s)
Just recently during a brief vacation the outer glass tube on my 1000W MH light failed (exploded would be a good term) due to water being sprayed on it.
When the outer glass tube fails the area under and around the light is dosed with a high level of UV. Fortunately the person caring for my plants was not injured. Many of the plants in my grow area received instant sunburn. Many plants show no ill affects at all, despite being right beside one that was injured! Here are a few pics. Hardest hit were compots of Phal. bellina with approx 80% leaf loss. Around the room leaves are dropping almost daily. In several of the pictures you can see the bright green growth that has occurred since the burn. Promising signs. |
dang! :( That's rough.

Oh yikes Dave :(

On the bright side Dave: as you said, nobody got injured. Fortunately your set up is so near-perfect that you'll be able so save a lot of them. I'm looking forward to seeing some of those bellinas.

There are already a few showing new growth, so I am hoping for the best. There were at least 50+ plants in that flask from Pat. Sounds like bellina heaven - doesn't it?

Sorry to hear that happened to you especially the Phal bellina 'Ingrid Ohh' x 'Joy' from Pat. I have the same cross as you do.

Ouch! Glad no-one was hurt and I hope your plants recover!

Was it a Type O bulb? In any event, probably a good reason to use a fixture with tempered glass in front of the bulb.
