Dendrobium Aggregatum to Pot or Mount ?
A month ago I purchased a Den. Aggregatum and would like some advice from other growers on how they grow it. It looks like it was just out of a plug tray growing in rock wool. It has 7 growths the largest being 3 inches. I potted it in a 3 inch net pot with loosely packed sphagnum moss for now.I water when moss is almost completely dry. It seems to be doing well and now has a new growth starting. Now would be the time to make any changes so any advice on what other growers use as a medium would be appreciated. I am a window grower in winter so I don't know if mounting would be a option.

I don't grow this one, and don't know about it's care requirements - I'm sure others will have advise and suggestions for you. I do have a few small mounted orchids that I grow in windows (hanging from the curtain rods lol!)- including a Den (bigibbum v. compactum - but I don't know if that takes similar care, or how size compares with aggregatum) So while I can't advise on this particular species, it is possible to grow mounted orchids in windows - just takes figuring out the logistics (how to situate in the window, watering, etc.) I take mine to the sink or shower to water them, and let them drip off in the shower before putting them back

i have one... its a pretty tough plant considering its been with me for 3 years now and hasnt died (survived below freezing temps, 100+ temps, and not being watewred for months on end.) but it hasnt flowered (go figure). It's bloom size since i got it but it only puts out 1 or 2 new growths a year for me and has neglectable new root growth. its potted in bark slightly above the edge of the pot incase it blooms for the spike to hang out. ive seen everyone elses plants mounted and theyre all way bigger and bloom alot so from my point of view mounting is the way to go except i live in the desert and that just wont do :) idk if that helped but my 2cents

I am a windowsill grower and these goes on the East facing window of the bathroom....I have one mounted on tree fern stick and one potted in Dendrobium mix I got from repotme.com....I care for this just as Sonya described
the one potted is growing better and producing more bulbs this warmer months....you must give it rest period( every other week watering and no fertilizer starting Nov 15 to January 15 until you see a spike come out....then start the every other day watering and weekly weakly fertilizer regimen....especially in the warm growing months be careful with scale or mite infestations it can eat all the leaves and kill your plant |
Thanks for the advice everyone. I think I my try mounting it when the new growth gets a little bigger.

I have 2. One mounted on a cedar board and the other potted in LECA.
The one in LECA grows faster and larger than the mounted one. Maureen |
