Plant Segment Descriptors

When reading descriptions of plants, often in the process of trying to identify a species, we will often come across terms like "terete" leaves, or "oblanceolate" petals.

What in the world does that mean????

Believe it or not, there is a whole standard for plant symmetry descriptors, based upon dimensional mathematical ratios and the surrounding forms, for both planar (2-dimensional) and solid shapes. The folks at the Fairchild Botanical Garden have put together really nice tables to help us understand them. I have links to both on my Free Information page HERE.
