No tag with it
Hi all,
I was given this wonder Phal today for my birthday, it come with a big pot with other plants potted together. Well during the transportation to home 3 blooms fell off anyhow. I know i should repot it asap but i don't want to risk the blooms. Can anyone identify it or is it a NOID? http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...s/IMG_0639.jpg http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...s/IMG_0637.jpg http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...s/IMG_0635.jpg http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...s/IMG_0630.jpg http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/k...s/IMG_0629.jpg Cheers V |
Noid means no id. Therefore yes, your plant is a noid. Basically there are so many phal hybrids around, many of them looking almost the same, that without a label, it's impossible to definitely identify them without genetic testing. I know, it's so anoying... I have some wonderful noids.
If you like the big white flowers and want to get something with an id in future you might want to check out Sogo Yukudian. I don't think that's what you've got, though yours might be related to it. Otherwise just enjoy your plant! Check if that pot allows good drainage. If not, then I'd repot it straight away: phals are pretty tolerant of repotting so you probably wouldn't lose the flowers. |
Agreed, impossible to identify a standard phal without a tag. I like to make up names for my NOIDs, but always make clear it's NOID and a made up name when posting. It helps me keep track of my orchids to have names for them all, and the NOIDs are just as pretty.

Thanks for your prompt reply,
I just google for Soko Yukudian and mine look exactly like that. Oak Hill Gardens I wonder why didn't this phal come with some kind of tag either a phalaenopsis or anything not even with care sheet but then again it come from a Florist and all they do is to arrange the plant to sell. Better still, sell to people who only go for the wonderful bloom and then when Phal lost all the bloom some people would just chuck it away thinking that it is dead and buy new phal. (Well i witness that before) As beautiful as this Phal can be, i personally wouldn't buy it as it is in a pot not even suitable for phal, and plants that don't match. I don't know the other plants that come with it but i suspect 1 of which don't like to be water as much. It's a gift from Office and my room mate. |
Most white Phals look alike and it is highly unlikely that yours, sold by a Florist is Sogo Yukudian.

Yes, while the flower is very similar (which is why I said you might like it and yours might possibly be related) the growth habit is different. SY's have very long flower spikes with large numbers of flowers.
Eg here's one It's a long story, but I currently have 2 just going out of flower. They only have one spike each and they aren't as long as that, but they are still pretty impressive. I've also seen plants that look like my SY's (but unlabelled so can't be sure) for sale locally for considerably more than other phals! I'm actually not that keen on the huge flowers myself so I'll be moving mine on when they are out of their current mealie quarentine! LOL |
