Unhappy phal with various new growths
2 Attachment(s)
Having had issues in the past with my pot not drying out quickly enough, and my phal losing roots due to rot, I have become very careful about over-watering; about a month ago, some of the leaves looked dehydrated so I thought I better look at the roots in case they had gone rotten, as it seemed unlikely that I was under-watering. The roots were fine. I repotted as the pot had seen better days, although the pot was larger than I wanted. The plant continued to look slightly unhappy, and one leaf that had been damaged died off.
Underneath where the damaged leaf had been, there were lots of bumpy bits which I assumed would be roots, and sure enough, one of them has started growing. The leaf opposite the damaged leaf quickly went yellow, and came off too. Now roughly in its place, there is a growth on the stem, and there is a pointy growth on the side. Meanwhile, in the crown, there appears to be two new leaves growing (one is very small and new, yet there appears to be something inside which again, looks like a new leaf) I also have something leaf-like growing beneath the lowest leaf. In the meantime, the existing leaves do not look good. I have some old ones that have been on the slow road to aging and dropping (for a long time, it has had ten leaves - apart from the two already mentioned, it has only lost one leaf in about 2 1/2 years), and others look wrinkled and dehydrated. I am confused: is my phal happy or unhappy? And what are the growths that are not roots? |
I can't tell, but it looks like the other growth might be a basal keiki, or baby plant.
|
Phal. do this.... Not to worry! As long as you have new roots and new top growth you should be ok!
|
The growth looks like a basil keiki to me as well. You might also have a spike but it's difficult to tell.
|
Thanks, folks.
RosieC: you said that maybe there was a spike coming - did you mean the pointy growth on the right? I had read that spikes look mitten-like as they grow. The thing on the left looks like a leaf growing out of its own holster with the "bottom" towards the stem. I've had it for five years and it has never flowered. I take it I can assume it hasn't given up the will to live just yet... |
In the first pic the growth on the far left looks like it could be a spike. The one that is growing upwards. The rest are roots in the first pic. In the second pic it is hard to tell but if it is growing under the leaves it is most likely a basil keiki like the others said.

I meant the bit on the right, but from your description it does sound more like a keiki. Just hard to see from the pic.

This is the growth on the left now (for anyone who may be interested!). The one on the right is still looking more pointed than any of the other growths
|
Definitely a keiki :-)
|
... and the pointy one on the right has "split" and is actually two separate leaves - so by the looks of things, I have three keikis (as well as new growth from the crown).
