This one I got as a present and had no idea what to expcect: when the buds developed, I thought the flowers would become female. Has a strong minty scent. Catasetum (barbatum x Thinger Dinger) = Catasetum Jacqueline Perez

very nice blooms but IMHO those are hermaphrodites. hope to see now the male flower looks like. keep us posted in the future when they bloom a male spike

That is a gorgeous flower. I love the colors and form....
Ihave several Catasetum and as of now I still cannot distinguish the male from the female and it will really be very helpful to know how to distinguish a hermaphrodite flower....
I guess I must learn the parts of the flowers first before I can be able to tell....

Ian - I don't believe they are hermaphroditic at all, the funky shape of the lip comes from the cassideum (syn discolor) parent.

sorry, i misinterpret the statement in the initial thread,. i thought those were pics of a female flower. my apologies.

by the way is catasetum cassideum = catasetum discolor/ciliatum?
because when i search for catasetum discolor under IOSPE, the synonym section stated there catasetum cassdideum. but again you can find catasetum cassideum under IOSPE as a separate species.

IOSPE is a good sight for certain info but I would not recommend using it as the definitive authority on the validity of a species.
