Grammatophyllum scriptum v kiilani

Grammatophyllums are very large plants but this is a miniature. This plant is only 5” (14cm) tall that blooms several times a year. The flowers don't open fully although I have seen pictures of this flat and fully opened as I have seen it posted some time ago by Chryss aka Merlyn.

Grammatophyllum are the family among the largest orchids in the world. Gram. speciosum is in the Guiness book of world records as reaching 2000 pounds with 7 foot leaves and 9 foot flower sprays.

Gram scriptum var kiilani is a newly introduced miniature. It flowers with the same coloration as its large parents yet seldom gets over 10 inches tall and flowers in a two inch pot. Easy to grow if given enough water and fertilizer that has a tendency to drop leaves if grown too cool over the winter, but recover rapidly when the warmer months of growing season starts and needs high sunlight to set flowers. My Gramms get direct sunlight from dawn to 11am out on the fire escape of my apartment.

The last picture are the comparison photo. The ‘kiilani’ is hardly bigger than the largest bulb of the ‘Early Riser’

Did you get the blooming size? This is very easy to grow in your zone. You can even have it outdoors. And what is really exciting about this is: it blooms as many as it can a year.

nice, but it's not a "newly introduced" or "miniature"
I posted a thread about this variety 4 years ago, and have since found out that it's not a miniature, it gets every bit as large as the other scriptum varieties, it just blooms earlier and more frequently.
