The revenge of the monster Dendrobium
1 Attachment(s)
This Dendrobium has been in this 6" pot for at least 6 years (did I just hear a big gasp?). I have never change the medium (none left). My husband thinks I should divide it, but it is 4' tall and 4' wide and I have little hope I can get it to stand up without major scaffolding. I don't plan on doing anything to it unless it stops blooming which it hasn't in the last 3 years. I always have flowers.

If it aint broke... dont fix it ;-)

You could always mount it.

Why mess with such beauty? It looks super happy! If the space is an issue, you can always stake the new canes, so they grow upwards rather than lean to the side. But I think it looks so great just the way it it, I personally would just let it be.

Love it! :wtg:

Looks wonderful! I would just keep it like that

Eventually, all the mix will break down and the plant will deteriorate. :( Have you considered up-potting it to a larger pot adding additional mix as an alternative? I definitely agree staking the canes upright to minimize the space component. :waving

If you choose to go specimen on this one, you really should stake it for both space and aesthics. So if you aren't going to divide it, just groups those canes together closer somehow.

Why mess with success? It looks awesome!! Maybe you could just chunk the entire thing into a larger pot, with maybe leca as medium so you don't have to worry about it degrading.

I think Camille is right on about just putting it into a larger pot. You can keep it in the current pot and put the entire thing into a larger pot. Pot the entire thing in lava rock/cinder or leca or course pine bark so it gets lots of air to the roo. You say that there is little or no media left in the current pot? That's all the better. Looks lovely. And flowers all the time? Good growing. I love specimens. And I learned something here too. Flowers on dens when they have leaves. I don't grow them although I do have one noid and a small group of den kingianum. They don't thrill me though.
