THANK YOU EVERYONE!!

I've been on here for a few months now, picking everyone's brain, asking more questions than a 2-year-old. And GUESS WHAT?

My little Daniella sprouted a new leaf. It looks kind of mottled, but I see it as a step in the right direction.

So thank you EVERYONE for your help! I definitely would have killed her by now if it weren't for all of you!

Just thought I would share some happy news.

And I have pictures.

What is Dr Shultz orchid mix?

tucker85 05-09-2012 12:11 PM

Congratulations, good growing.

hahaha!!! Good call VJO.....It's Shultz orchid mix. I was confused. Dr Sholls makes insoles.

aaaaanyway....it's a mixture of fir bark, vermiculite/charcoal and pumice....but don't quote me on that. I'm probably wrong there too.

Thanks Tucker85....It's pretty exciting.

I just bought some of Schultz mix the other day to replant my mother's sad orchids (pretty much the only chance they have). I believe its conifer bark (it wasn't really specific), horticultural charcoal, and bits of fired earthenware (red clay). I don't know if there's any pumice in it, but there might be! I just know there's bits of those three in it.

Congratulations on the new leaf, way to grow!

You're right LittleWatty....it's not very specific...but I do remember reading somewhere on the bag that it is "region specific"....so I imagine they make different mixes for different climates?

So many factors to take into consideration!

You will be rewarded with beautiful blooms when your plant recovers...
My first orchid was a rescue from the dumpsters of a posh Hotel while waiting for a friend to take off work. I was attracted to the nice blue porcelain bowl and the colored plastic butterflies on the spikes...I was not embarassed to rummage the trash in public...its just crazy that Hotel staff thrash orchids after a month of not watering then in their lobbies.

I totally would have done the same thing! I always keep my eyes open for sick plants. I've never thought about the hotels. Not that I can't afford to buy plants, I just don't always agree with our "disposable" culture.

My first orchid was a rescue orchid I took from my mom...It was a "just add ice" orchid. It died. But I learned a lot!

Oh...More good news!

Today when I checked on my orchids, I saw Diana has sprouted a new leaf as well!! I didn't even expect her to make it!! So exciting!!

YOU GUYS ROCK!!
