What Does This Orchid look Like To You?

A thread for discussing what some of the weird and wonderful orchids look like to us, cute, nice or nasty!

This is intended to be for fun. So if you don't want to hear that people think your favorite orchid looks like a toilet, don't read further! LOL

This discussion started when this thread went a bit off topic...

So, to get started...

Cute: Dendrobium cyanocentrum: looks like Big Bird had chicks!

Not so cute: Paphiopedilum delenatii: looks like a fat pink face about to do a massive spit.

I actually like the bluish purple color on that dendrobium and it does look like a bird of some sort.

Delenatii still looks like a toilet bowl to me, but I just love they way you describe. maybe you just have better imagination

I think we all have to settle on the old sayin .... "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder"

Besides, folks pay alot of more for those lil toilet bowls, So there!
Lots of gorgeous photos in that second link :D

I love that Dendrobium cyanocentrum. I am looking for it as we speak. I must have it but by the color it's probably a cool to intermediate grower. Paph delenatii is one of my favorite paphs which bloomed this year.

When I first came across the Den I searched too. The only place I found it in the EU was on a very out of date flask list. I will definitely try again at some point, but I think it did sound like it really needed a terranium set up, which is something I can't get into right now.

Another one for you: Bulbophyllum lasiochilum, the yellow ones especially make me think of leopards, or maybe they are little creatures wearing spotty pyjamas.

They are all beautiful and if you think there are flowers that are off tangent....just imagine how the plant must have exerted energy to give its shape, texture and form...let alone to provide the colors for it...
to each his own...provides a unique and one of a kind experience

If you mean cianocentrum, checo at Elsner or Popow. They use to have it very opten in their catalogue...and I know people growing ti and without needing a terrarium...

Just found a really amazing flower. Elements of birds head, snake skin and snail foot:

Shop - Orchideen Lucke

Definitely on my wish list, though I'll have to check out if it's stinky, and if it is it will wait till I live in a place I don't have to share a small flat with it! LOL

I was thinking.... of course what looks good is personal. I've been reading about the guidelines used for judging flowers. Apparently wider petals, flatter and bigger are all better. To me those are not qualities that make a flower better. I like variety. There's a much awarded hybridizer here, McBeans. All their odontoglossum hybrids are the same shape, and it's a shape I find a bit regular and not really 'orchidy' if that makes sense. Please note I'm not saying that McBeans or any other flowers are 'bad' or not beautiful, just not to my taste really.

Having said that, it's funny, but since starting this, delanatti is looking a lot better to me! LOL

I will be keeping my eyes open for the cyanocentrum!

I don't know why i find this attractive, but Den. spectabile looks like a scab to me- and i love it. The only non-spatulata that really appeals.
