I could hardly wait for the flowers to open, on this Cycnoches first time to flower for me, I have had this Cycnoches for a year, I saw my first flowers on a trip to Maui last fall, and that was it I had to have one. So I constrained myself and I got only one, to make sure this orchid would grow ok in my home.
When I see that this plant was going to flower I did a happy dance, good thing know one was around ha… each day I would run out first thing in the morning to see how much the spike had grown and if the buds were getting fatter..
I was so excited the other day when at last the buds popped open and this lovely Swan blossom.
If anyone stops in to see us they are quickly rushed out to the patio to see the flowers on my Cycnoches.
And as we all know orchids are addictive and I now have 5 Cycnoches and one Catasetum.
And you can be assured that when these new ones flower I will be doing that happy dance again.

Great job, Laura!

I just bloomed my first Catasetum and that same happy dance was happening here too  Very exciting stuff!!!

What conditions did you grow this Cyc under? I have the same plant but it hasn't bloomed...and looks nothing like yours...which is GORGEOUS!

growing Cyc

Susanne I am a windowsill grower and my Cycnoches culture is like this in the spring after the new growth is about 3 inches and you have some good growth on your roots, I began to water the plant but do not water to soon make sure the roots are growing and the new growth is about 3 inches or so.
As the temp warms up in the spring I move my plant outside to my patio where it gets morning sun, be sure to work up to the sun as not to burn the leaves. The plants require constant moisture and regular fertilization at this time of year.
Sometime after flowering, in the late autumn the plants will begin to enter the dormancy phase. As this slowing takes place you want to cut down the watering and let the plant go into its dormancy, where it gets know water at all. This is a very important step.
For more detailed culture if you visit Sunset Valley orchids, he has a very good culture sheet.

We had Frank Clarke speak and show slides at our last society meeting. If you ever get the chance to here him, you are in for a real treat. He is both very informative and humorous.

Very good growing, Laura!! This one is a real beauty. It looks like a very happy, healthy plant. :)

Laura - it is spectacular! I think you have the male flowers (more plentiful, smaller).
Does this have a scent that you can detect?
It is very lovely.

Congratulations on your Cycnoches, Laura! And BTW, we orchid lovers are all the same no matter where we are, or the orchids we grow, don't you think? I mean, I have my happy dance, too!!
