CFLs?
 

Hi All--

I've seen references to using CFL bulbs for supplemental lighting. Are the bulbs being referenced the standard old CFL bulbs being sold in any big box store as long as it's the right K value?

That's what me and some of my friends use. Works great for some applications but will give out more heat.

I don't know if it's the same in the US, but over here in big box stores it's impossible to find CFLs any stronger than 20W or so. I use 55 and 80W for my plants, and had to get them online.

Ah, well, I haven't actually looked for them yet. I was wondering if it was the same CFLs I was thinking about. I also have to compare costs between those and T5s. Just gearing up for some research.

I use both, in different areas. Both give out quite a bit of heat, so there are advantages for int./warm growing orchids. If you can keep the humidity at acceptable levels, it's fine: you'll have good light, and a reasonable day/night temp. differential. (BTW: I knew the area where you live quite well. I went to high school in Middelburg (Zeeland), and every summer we made day trips to Vlaanderen!). Good to see you here on OB

Camille: it certainly is. I was born and raised in the Netherlands, but learned French at a young age, and spent a few years in the Geneva area before moving to Montreal, and from there to Edmonton. The participation of people from all over the world in the forums here is truly remarkable: everyone is made to feel at home here, no matter what the language skills are or how (in) expert they are growing orchids. There's a lot to be said for that!

What a world traveler, like I am!! I'm on french origin, born and raised in the USA, moved back to France with the parents when I was 15, lived there 6 years then did most of my studies in the Netherlands (have lived in Dronten, De Lier, Enkhuizen and Wageningen). Wish I didn't suck so bad at picking up languages, I'm getting nowhere fast with my dutch....

Camille: dat geloof ik niet. Jouw Nederlands moet erg good zijn, als je in Nederland studeert. On a brighter side: although Dutch is a beautiful language, it's not the most useful outside of Dutch borders.
