Intergeneric odontoglossum/oncidium Spotting Fungus?
1 Attachment(s)
first time orchid grower here :waving
I repotted my plant a few months ago, trimmed back the spike...now just recently noticed some of the leaves are feeling weaker and have dark spots on the underside. could it be fungus? or the lighting? |
Could use a little more light, not too much, though.
How often do you water? The leaves are not rigid for this type of orchid. |
Oncidium alliance can be prone to leaf spotting - not sure if what you have is something to be concerned about or not. I usually watch the new growth - that should be free from spots.
|
i usually hand spray the soil about once a week sometimes more if it seems dry...i'll try moving it to better lighting and see how it goes. i've read that spotting on this type of orchid is normal but i became concerned when i noticed the yellowing on the creases and freckling in the color...
Thanks so much(: -there are no spots on the newer leaves |
Soil?
Are you using potting soil to grow a plant that grows on trees by any chance? |
also ( + getting the pot mix right ) you need to ensure that you drench-water the pot at least 1x per week - that is water must run out of the bottom. This ensures that salt-buildup is removed ( you should be fertilising weakly, weekly ) and also that all roots are drenched. Just misting doesn't drench the whole pot.
|
If it's in soil, change to a bark based orchid mix.
Make sure you have plenty of drainage from the pot: if you need to, drill some holes in the bottom of that pot. Once drainage is good, you can give it a good watering when you water it, allowing it to drain (I stick mine on the draining board to water), then nearly dry before you water again. Having said that, if that new growth is growing you can't be doing too bad! |
